Index to carillons and chimes by Meneely (Watervliet)

The Meneely (Watervliet) foundry, which closed about 1950, provided bells for various carillons and chimes throughout the Western hemisphere.  It is not to be confused with the Meneely (Troy) foundry; though the families which operated the two foundries were related, there was intense competition between them.  Contributing to the confusion is the fact that Watervliet was originally known as West Troy.  See the bottom of this page for additional historical notes on the origin and development of this bellfoundry and on the various names used by it.

For an explanation of what this index contains (and does NOT contain), and of the additional details on each entry, see the Bellfoundry Indexes Advice.

Meneelys', West Troy, New York, USA (?-1873)

The name "Meneelys'" seems to have been a trade name.  It is certain that it was in use during at least part of the period when the proprietorship of the foundry was in the hands of "Andrew Meneely's Sons" (1851-63) as well as that of "E.A. & G.R. Meneely" (1863-74).  (See historical notes below.)
It is not certain that "Meneelys'" is the actual name which appears on the bells of all the chimes in this group.  They are tentatively collected under this heading for convenience, and may be rearranged in the future.

Historical Notes:

The bellfoundry which we have designated "Meneely (Watervliet)" actually began in 1826 in the village of Gibbonsville, New York.  This village was on the west bank of the Hudson River, a few miles north of the city of Albany.  It was also a few miles south of the Mohawk River, which was the eastern terminus of the Erie Canal, opened in 1825 as a major transportation route to the west.  Gibbonsville was later incorporated into the town of West Troy, which in 1896 was renamed Watervliet.

The proprietorship of this bellfoundry changed over the course of its first half-century of operation as follows:

It isn't known how consistently the markings on bells and equipment followed the changes in proprietorship.  However, numerous bells and fittings from various years are marked simply "Meneelys'".

The bellfoundry which we have designated "Meneely (Troy)", referenced in the first paragraph on this page, was operated by Clinton Hanks Meneely, the third son of Andrew Meneely.  Both firms manufactured a variety of other metal products at various times.  The two Meneely foundries had no connection other than the blood relationships of their principals.  They competed vigorously (and sometimes bitterly) with each other throughout their dual existence.

Additional information about both Meneely bellfoundries can be found on a Website about the Meneely Bicentennial, defined based on the birthdate of Andrew Meneely.

Other interesting bits of information are in the Meneely Bell Online Museum.

Historic marker at the location of the Meneely (Watervliet) bellfoundry, with extensive photos and descriptions.

The interconnections between the Meneelys and the Hanks bellfounders and industrialists are shown in a different manner on a Hanks genealogy page.
