Navigating with frames
Using frames to display a navigation menu alongside of content pages
offers an alternative to the usual page-at-a-time navigation.
But there are a few quirks to it, as follows:
- To keep things simple, only the topmost page ("Data_Top") has been modified
for the frames environment.
Therefore, you can navigate freely using both the
menu frame and almost all links embedded in pages, interchangeably.
There are two exceptions:
- Avoid using the link to "TowerBells Home Page" in the navigation bar
at the bottom of each page (including this one!), because that will
put the Home Page into the right frame,
when it should occupy a window by itself.
And after that, the links in the Data Navigation menu frame will not
work at all.
- Instead of using the link to "Site data top page" in the little
navigation menu found at the bottom of each page, use the link
"Return to Data Top" at the bottom of the Data Navigation menu frame.
- To keep the Data Navigation menu short, it is organized into two levels.
Any section heading marked with a closed twister
()
can be clicked (on either the twister or the heading)
to expand that section, offering an appropriate group of links.
Any section heading marked with an open twister
()
can be clicked (on either the twister or the heading)
to close that section, returning to the top level menu.
- Although the twister icons are copied from an old version of the Mac OS,
their behavior is slightly different here.
The "Worldwide" and "General" sections are open only in the top level menu,
and only one section can be open at a time.
- Clicking any non-heading link in the Data Navigation menu frame at left
opens the corresponding page in the frame at right.
- If your browser supports it, you can resize the menu frame
by dragging the frame separator left or right.
To eliminate the menu frame, go to the bottom of it and click on the "without frames" link.
That will take you back to the original Data Top page, from which you can then navigate
by the original method.
