What's new in these pages?

This page reports on the evolution of this collection of pages during the year 2010.  This helps to keep the "What's New" page to a manageable size.  The changes are reported in reverse order, with the latest (the "news item") at the top.  Dates of entries show when pages were installed on the Web server, which is not always the same as their internal dates of revision.  Revisions to the list of non-carillon things will not be reported, nor will minor (cosmetic) editorial fixes (though the revision dates of such files will change).

2010/11/27 - Revised summaries for North America by state/province for traditional carillons and non-traditional carillons and by weight for traditional carillons, and revised the index for North America by denomination for traditional carillons, correcting various numbers.

2010/10/05 -

After making an unhappy complaint to MapQuest about the fact that their servers no longer recognize map links of the form that's been used here for several years (see red box dated 2010/10/01, below), I was placated by receiving a response showing a new way to link by latitude/longitude.  I'm still unhappy at having to change more than 1300 pages to use the new link format, because MapQuest could certainly have provided an automatic redirection from the old format to the new.  But at least our visitors who prefer MapQuest will be inconvenienced only temporarily.

Revised the same 26 pages as yesterday (2010/10/04), this time adding new-style MapQuest links.

Revised the Map Usage Hints, the MapQuest usage hints and the Map Service History to reflect the latest events.

2010/10/04 - Revised 26 site data pages (list IX101001.HTM removed to archive in 2023); revised affected regional locator maps accordingly.  Most changes are small refinements of lat/lon (based on the latest Google overhead photography) and/or removals of obsolete eddresses (based on bounced notifications for the 09/30 revisions).

Revised regional locator map display to include state/province/country 2-letter codes in the dropdown list.  This is more likely to be helpful on revision maps (see below) than on maps of geographic regions (where all sites on a map might have the same code).

2010/10/01 -

While quality-checking yesterday's updates, I discovered that the "new" MapQuest no longer recognizes map links of the form that's been used here for several years (decimal latitude/longitude, rather than street address).  Regardless of the parameters supplied in the link, MapQuest will go to its home page and display a generic high-level map centered on where it deduces that you are located.  The only remaining link method for MapQuest is by street address.  That's useless for our purposes, since most bell towers cannot be precisely located by street address.  Therefore, all existing MapQuest links will be removed as site data pages are updated in the future.

2010/09/30 - Revised 79 site data pages (list IX100920.HTM removed to archive in 2023); revised affected indexes and regional locator maps accordingly.  Locator maps are now complete (as possible) for all North American chimes.

Added Bing Maps birdseye views and/or missing index links to, and/or removed broken links from, 240 other site data pages.  Bing views are now complete (as available) for all North American chimes.

Revised the standard format description page to clarify several minor details.

As an experiment, reorganized part of the North American chime index by number of bells to show the semitone configuration for 9-bell instruments.  If successful, this reorganization will be extended to other numbers of bells, and possibly to similar indexes for other types of instruments.

2010/09/18 - Revised 33 site data pages (list IX100916.HTM removed to archive in 2023), either removing obsolete email addresses (discovered as a result of sending standard notification messages for the 09/16 update) or fine-tuning map locations (because Google has improved their overhead photography recently).

2010/09/16 - Revised 99 site data pages (list IX100907.HTM removed to archive in 2023); revised affected indexes and regional locator maps accordingly.  Locator maps are now complete (as possible) for all North American chimes in US states M- through O-.

This update package is the second installment of replacements of broken locator maps links dating from from the shutdown of MapBlast by Microsoft (see Map Service History for July 2002) and the radical change in MapsOnUs by Switchboard (see August 2005 on the same page).  The first such installment was done 2009/12/12; approximately 140 further repairs remain to be done.
This package also contains the first links to Microsoft's new Bing Maps service, utilizing the "bird's eye" aerial perspective views which are available for some cities and towns in several countries.  Pages without Bing Maps links reflect the fact that no bird's eye view of the place was available at the time the page was updated.
